Machining induced near surface layer hardening
Roller bearing rings, after induction hardening, have been exposed to high mechanical and thermal loadings during machining. Changes in near subsurface affected layer (residual compressing stresses and hardness increase) can additionally improve wear properties of bearings, but also initiate the microcracks which could lead to fetigue failure. Ourt experiments were performed on induction hardened Ck 45 steel(56+-3 HRC), machined with ceramic Al2O3 TiCN inserts. These round 7 positive flank inserts with honed edge 0, 2x25 additionally increase hardening effect.
