Interdepedence of Sustainable Development and Tourism in Adriatic and Rural Region

This paper looks at environmental protection, in particular, the protection of marine and rural environments, which is vital to the development of tourism in the Adriatic, not only because of the growing awareness of the necessity of environmental conservation, but also because of the demands being placed on tourism organisations. Croatia is traditionally a tourism-oriented country. The growth of tourism traffic in recent years provides evidence that tourism in Croatia is on the road to becoming a prime engine of economic development. To increase the economic effects of tourism, it is essential to adopt and implement a tourism strategy that focuses on sustainable development and is oriented towards those forms of tourism capable of generating benefits for all stakeholders. Today’ s tourists are increasingly seeking destinations in which the quality of the environment is at a high level. Importantly, local populations should not be made to suffer the consequences of a disrupted environment and tourism development should not bring about any substantial socio-cultural change. The authors examine and analysis the interdependence of sustainable development and local communities on the coast and in the hinterland. They underline the need to involve local communities in the processes of planning and development, and the necessity of developing those forms of tourism that are most likely to bring benefits to the local community. Maximising the benefits that the local population can capture from tourism development will result in greater support from residents for developing tourism and for the conservation of local resources. The complementary advantages of the Adriatic destination with its hinterland enable tourism to develop in all its forms by taking into account the local community, while adhering to the basic aspects of sustainable tourism development.
