Application of Quantitative Method for Selecting Optimum Combination of Stock Material and Manufacturing Process
In this paper, a weighted-properties method of materials selection has been applied to select the optimum combination of stock material and manufacturing process. Six requirements were included: stock material costs, stock material preparation costs and manufacturing costs, as well as material availability and purchase possibility, machinability and total material utilization. Two independent objective functions are defined: maximal material utilization and minimal total costs. For the first objective function, steel tube machining is the optimum solution between three variants of stock materials. For the second objective function, steel plate machining is the optimum solution.
