Implementation of PATHS program – Croatian experiences

The project &laquo ; Prevention of behavior disorders in the local community&raquo ; (Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences of the University of Zagreb, Croatia and the County of Istria Administrative Department for Health and Social Welfare, Croatia) follows six main phases: (1) Creating the team of coordinators, (2) Needs assessment, (3) Resource assessment, (4) Identification of priorities, (5) Development, implementation and evaluation of available/new prevention programs and (6) Model evaluation. Main goal of the following project &laquo ; Prevention of behavior disorders – development, implementation and evaluation of the community prevention model&raquo ; is to identify core elements of community-based prevention model as priotities for prevention investment on local and regional level. One of identified priority was &laquo ; socio-emotional development&raquo ; (phase 4). In order to focus prevention efforts Coalition for prevention in County of Istria decided to adopt and implement PATHS program (Greenberg, M & Kusche, C.) in two schools in County, one in Porec and one in Labin (phase 5). PATHS is implemented with support of Prevention Research Center from Penn State University. In this poster two main issues will be disscused: program implementation and planned evaluation. Proces of implementation started with teacher training in August (2007) and teachers start to implement PATHS lessons in the midle of September, after the school year started. It is planned to present the process of implementation with special emphasis on Croatian experiences in program delivery. The other important issue is evaluation which is planned as randomized control trial (two PATHS classes and two control classes in each school). For collecting the data, there were two instruments used: Emotion recognition questionnaire and TOC-A – social competence teacher rating. The data were collected right after the program started (pre PATHS), and the second collection (post PATHS) will be at the end of school year, in May 2008. The results of pre PATHS assessment will be also presented.
