Honey bee products as indicators of caesium

Radionuclides, as well as other cations, which are eirher constitutive elements or trace elements of soil, or deposited as a fallout due to global atmospheric pollution, can migrate upwards by plant uptake. Deposited caesium penetrates into the soil and can be uptaken by plants, depending on various factors (sorption and desorption processes, mineral soil composition and organic matter content, soil grain size and soil types, bioturbation, rainfall and desiccation cracks, lateral migration, etc.). The maximum area covered by honey bees in their nectar-gathering process can be represented by a circle with radius of few kilometres in which, the most of previously mentioned factors could be included. It seems that the sample of honey could be one of the best random samples which is representative for the broader area, generally. The trend towards decreasing value of ^137Cs activity in bush/tree and meadow nectar honey types was documented on samples collected in period 1990-1994. Average value of ^137Cs activity in nectar honey collected in 1990 year was 4.0 ą 2.4 Bq/kg (n=9) vs. 0.3 ą 0.2 Bq/kg (n=20) in nectar honey samples collected in 1994 year. Meanwhile, ^137Cs activities in honey-dew honey are significantly higher than in nectar honey types. Numerous honey-dew honey samples collected from 1993 to 1997 in Gorski Kotar (Croatia) were analysed and caesium was found in relatively high concentrations - more than tenfold higher than in nectar honey from the respective year. In samples collected in 1993 year, for example, results in honey-dew honey were 26.7 ą 10.6 Bq/kg (n=11) vs. 0.5 ą 0.2 Bq/kg (n=17) in nectar honey.
