Special care dentistry

Book “ Special care dentistry” deals with dental care of patients with special needs (PSN). The first chapter speaks generally about special care dentistry (SCD), explains most common terms and regulations that are protecting PSN against discrimination. Chapters 2-5 are dedicated to dental care of patients with physical disability, visual and/or auditory impairment, mental retardation and most common psychiatric disorders. Modes of approach and communication in order to get the patient’ s trust are clearly described. Few nice “ tricks” for facilitation of oral hygiene are shown on photographs. Chapters 6-9 are dealing with dental care of medically compromised patients as follows: patients with increased risk for bacterial endocarditis, immunocompromised patients, patients on radiotherapy and patients with bleeding disorders. Concise information about etiology, epidemiology and clinical manifestations of each disorder are listed in the text. Special considerations regarding dental treatment of each group of patients are clearly emphasized. The tenth chapter is dedicated to management of pronounced gag reflex. The chapter offers extensive information about etiology and classification of the disorder together with description of different treatment techniques. Non-invasive dental treatment is described in the eleventh chapter while the twelveth chapter deals with sedation and general anesthesia in SCD. This chapter describes advantages and disadvantages of general anesthesia and provides guidelines for decision between sedation and general anesthesia. Book “ Special care dentistry” is primarily intended for general dental practitioners but can also be very useful for dental students. It offers concise and clinically applicable information for routine dental care of PSN and therefore it is strongly recommended.
