Analysis of various aspects of computer-mediated communication in the context of language skills development and communication apprehension in English as a foreign language

Data concerning active and passive language skills in using English as a foreign language (EFL) essential for participating successfully in computer-mediated communication were gathered through a survey conducted among university students. Whereas in analyzing active (productive) language skills the emphasis was put on overall verbal skills, as well as the acquisition of speaking and writing skills in particular, in the domain of passive (receptive) language skills the survey focused on listening and reading. First, self-evaluation of foreign language skills acquired through primary and secondary school was conducted. Next, the findings were compared against the ones obtained through self-evaluation of foreign language skills acquired by participating in the English for Information Technology university course. The self-evaluation involved language skills in general English as well as technical English. Both active and passive language skills were again defined as criteria of establishing the level of language skills development through self-evaluation. Finally, findings were analyzed in terms of evaluation of the level of communication apprehension (CA), taking into consideration differences in the social aspect of situations in which direct interaction and computer-mediated communication respectively occur.
