Catalytic activity of novel N, N', N"-trisubstituted guanidine derivatives

Due to their high basicity, guanidines are widely used as catalysts in a number of base catalysed organic reactions. Transesterification of vegetable oils, as the key-step in Biodiesel® ; production, became an attractive area nowdays. Recently, we have prepared a series of novel type of highly basic guanidine derivatives possessing multiple intramolecular hydrogen bond. This was achieved by replacing imino and/or amino hydrogen atoms at each of the amino groups with dimethylaminopropyl or methoxypropyl-group. In this work, catalytic activity of the selected N, N', N''-trisubstituted guanidines in transesterification of vegetable oil (a) and in Knoevenagel reaction (b) will be discussed and compared with that of commercially available catalysts such as TBD, MTBD and P1 phosphazene.
