Between Nationalism and Multiculturalism: Central Europe in the Post-Communist Period
The paper deals with the problem of social transformations in post-communism concerning multiculturalism. Communism was characterized by the ideological urge to form supranational states in order to provide equality and unification among different societies. The functioning of these quasi-multicultural stetes was possible only through the use of a repressive political apparatus. The breakdown of communism and the political independence of the former communist countries make possible a radical reconceptualization of multiculturalism. Such a project treating more general social and political aspects of multiculturalism at the time of the current political changes, as well as the more particular aspects of the transition processes, the culturological and educational aspects of intercultural communication and transmission, needs to be sufficiently complex to give an integral picture of multiculturalism within the framework of social transformations.
