Quantitative analysis of hydrogen using TOF ERDA spectroscopy

Time-of-Flight Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis (TOF ERDA) is a well established and powerful ion beam analytical technique. Method is used for simultaneous, quantitative elemental depth distributions of light and medium mass elements in both light and heavy matrices. Unlike silicon detectors, the efficiency of the carbon-foil time detectors depends on energy and electronic stopping power of analyzing recoil atoms in the C foil and is often less than unity for light elements. This is particularly critical for hydrogen where detection efficiency can be drastically reduced (~ 10%). Therefore, TOF ERDA spectrometers are not the best choice for depth profiling and quantification of H and their isotopes. To improve TOF ERDA detection efficiency for H, electron emission of thin C foils (~0.3 µ g/cm2) was enhanced by evaporating thin LiF layer on the foil. That improves significantly H detection efficiency and makes TOF ERDA spectrometer suitable for hydrogen analysis. Ability of the spectrometer was demonstrated on samples with well known as well as unknown concentration and depth distribution of H and D. Also, advantages and disadvantages of the TOF ERDA method over other methods for the quantitative analysis of hydrogen were discussed.
