Modeling and Simulation by Modelica

The paper presents Modelica, an object oriented language for modeling and simulation of complex multi domain systems. The main advantage of object oriented modeling is in reusability of components which in turn is a key for handling complexity. Modelica is based on acasual modeling which takes no consideration for computational order and is thus closely related to the way people perceive physical systems. This makes modeling much easier to perform and understand especially for novice modelers. The benefits of Modelica language in comparison to classical simulation tools are demonstrated on the example of erection and stabilization of inverted pendulum on a cart. The model was built with aid of Dymola, a programming environment that uses Modelica at its core and offers number of additional features. The same model was built in Simulink for comparison purposes.
