A 1-year longitudinal study of quality of life outcomes in patients with implant-supported fixed partial dentures
Aim: Quality of life is markedly affected by the amount of satisfaction or dissatisfaction with their dental therapy. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes of the oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL) in patients after implant therapy and prosthodontic rehabilitation with fixed partial dentures (FPDs). Materials and Methods: The OHIP49-CRO questionnaire was administered with supervision to 50 patients (IFD) (45.56 age mean ; 40 % women) before receiving implant treatment (Sweden and Martina – Kohno) and 1 year after rehabilitation with FPDs (metal-ceramics, DeguDent). The patients received a total of 122 implants, which were used for treatment of a single-tooth (4 cases) or for rehabilitation with FPDs (46 cases). Another group of 47 healthy young subjects (CHS) (22.31 age mean ; 60 % women) was randomly collected as a control group. Results: None of the implants was lost and no soft-tissue or prosthetic appliance failures were recorded during the observation period. There were no significant differences for the OHIP scores in the IFD patients between males and females, different age groups (<40, 40-59, >59), and maxillary or mandibular placement of implants (P>0.05). Furthermore, there was no significant difference of the OHIP scores dependent on the presence of the natural teeth or FPD in the antagonistic jaw (P>0.05). The CHS with no oral/or dental problems and having all natural teeth had the lowest OHIP49-CRO summary score and all seven subscales. The IFD follow-up OHIP scores were significantly smaller in comparison to baseline scores, but still remained significantly higher than the CHS scores (P<0.05) Conclusion: The implant-supported FPD patients demonstrated significant increase in OHRQoL after the therapy. However, the OHIP summary scores remained smaller than in the CHS group. Sex, age and maxillary or mandibular placement of implants had no influence on the OHRQoL.
