Development of a Tourist Destination: The Case of the Republic of Croatia

The Republic of Croatia is one of the most fashionable destinations on the international tourist market today. The purpose of this paper is to analyse and describe the development of Croatia as a tourist destination since 1991 in order to draw adequate conclusions and offer suggestions for the forthcoming period. For that purpose we have systematically examined and analysed the key components of the development so far through two developmental periods, namely from 1991 to 2000 and from 2001 to 2007. Accordingly, we have found out that the development of the tourist destination went through frequent changes especially for the legal regulations and marketing activities, and that it was influenced by significant changes of the economic and political environment. Our suggestion is that in the forthcoming period the Republic of Croatia as a tourist destination should be managed in a way that stakeholders become involved in the creation of its development, and that we should incline towards the development of sustainable tourism in line with the guidelines of the European tourism.
