The Adaptation of Works of Children's Literature into Electronic Form

The term children's literature used to a selection of books, picture-books, etc. containing stories, fairy-tales or poems intended for a younger reading audience. Nowdays, there is an everincreasing number of authors who try their hand at adaptations or at writingliterary works in electronic form, the result being so called elestronic books and elestronic picture-books. Today, a few decades after the first attempts of this kind, multimedia software from the area of children's literature has achieved a considerably high level. It can be said a new, "paralel" literature is appearing. However, these adaptations of literary works show considerable difference in the quality of the text, the grafic design as wel as in the way they affect the reader and communicate this way of creative work. This paper analyses the multimedia software Pippi Longstocking by A. Lindgren. The reason for this choice is primarly because this work ofliterature is known in the context children's literature and it is part of the obligatory reading in the 3rd grade of elementary school. Without regard to the indisputable quality of the literary text, we are aware that this software is not a representative example and it does not make use of all the possibilities a multimedia presenation can offer. The aim of this paper is to analyse the theoretical basis of adaptations of children's literature into electronic form. ie reading of the text (experience), the deviations from the original text, the possibility of creative work of the child while using this software as wel as the analysis of its possible educational influences. Since this software can be used in the language teaching process (functional communication), it is also our aim to examine critically the possibilities and limits of such a usage (primarily lexical, grammar and spelling exercises). As the chosen example does not meet most of the requeriments, a different approach is required from the teacher when using this material in the teaching process. We hope some of the ideas and suggestions will contribute to the better quality of educational software from the field of children's literature and teaching of language.
