Iron powder in Fenton type reactions for treatment of coloured wastewater comparison and advantages

Organic synthetic dyes are known to be recalcitrant and refractory water pollutants. Their presence in aquatic systems is undesirable from the aesthetic point of view, and moreover can cause a serious damage to the environment and human health as well. As a group of organics, synthetic dyes are generally considered as non-biodegradable. Traditional methods for coloured wastewater treatment are mainly based on waste transfer from one media to another. Therefore, an efficient treatment method with ability to remove and degrade organic dyes is the important task. Advanced oxidation processes seem to be promising toll for treatment of such type of wastewater. In this work iron powder has been applied as a catalyst and comprehensively compared with ferrous and ferric sulphate in Fenton and Fenton type processes as a treatment methods for model wastewater containing organic synthetic dye C.I. Reactive Blue 49. The optimal operating parameters for each process and mineralization rates have been established on the basis of UV/VIS, TOC and AOX analysis. Effect of ZSM and Y type of zeolite on process efficiency has been established. On the basis of obtained results it was shown that usage of iron powder as a Fenton type catalyst with and without addition of zeolite is suitable and effective treatment method for coloured wastewater.
