Optimisation of Reinforcements on Clothes

In engineering design of reinforcements a problem often appears of the way and the extent of the reinforcement of basic material. In order to solve this problem, the procedures of optimisation are introduced into engineering design and analysis. A solution can be argued to be optimal in terms of selection of size and shape of the reinforcement. In this paper the problem of optimal reinforcement of buttonhole was investigated. A numerical procedure is developed for theoretically optimal design of reinforcements of critical spots in textile products. Numerical stress-strain analysis involves the application of the finite element method. A simple isotropic linear elastic material law is assumed with reduced stiffness in compression. Due to limited compressive capacity, the compressive stresses are computationally reduced using an iterative procedure. In the paper an example of tensile specimen with transversal cut is analysed, which can be regarded as representative for buttonholes in clothes. The reinforcement of the stress concentration zone is designed as an area of pre-defined shape (rectangular or circular) in which the thickness is increased in accordance with the specified reinforcement factor. Two different densities of finite element mesh are investigated. As the number of finite elements was increased, accuracy of optimization was increasing too and the number of iterations necessary for convergence was reduced.
