Dimensional stabilisation of Fir wood modified by citric acid using different catalysts
Wood specimens of fir (Abies alba Mill) were chemically modified with polycarboxylic acids (PCA), cured by convection heating at different temperatures. Citric acid (CA) as a new non-formaldehyde crosslinking system reagent was used. For modification these reagents require phosphono-based catalysts, so a sodium hypophosphite (SHP) and NaH2PO4 as a catalyst was used in the study. The dimensional stability of the modified wood was determined by the anti-swelling efficiency (ASE) using the water soak/oven dry method. The results revealed improvement of the ASE of the wood modified by CA using both catalysts.
