Impact of road surface on vehicle vibration
Roads have rough surfaces resulting from poor road construction, insufficient maintenance and a large number of heavy vehicles. Certain irregularities in the road surface (recessions, bumps, manholes, etc.) significantly increase vehicle vibrations, reduce driving comfort and cause additional expenses for vehicle repairs and road reconstructions. This study presents an experimental investigation of personal vehicle vibrations caused by irregularities on road surfaces in Zagreb (Croatia). Vibrations were measured using an accelerometer at two measurement points: on the front right wheel and on the vehicle chassis. Croatia currently has no prescribed limits for passenger exposure to vibrations in vehicles. Also, no correlation has been made between road surface roughness and the magnitude of permitted vertical vibrations. The results of this study could serve to propose recommendations as to which road irregularities require reconstruction or maintenance in order to reduce vibrations and increase driving comfort. The criteria of permitted deviations should also be an integral part of road management.
