The Nobility of the Counties of Pozsega/Požega, Valkó/Vukovo and Szerém/Srijem in the Time of King Matthias

The paper deals with the nobility of three counties of the eastern part of the Sava and Drava interamnium (the counties of Pozsega/Požega, Valkó/Vukovo and Szerém/Srijem) in the time of King Matthias Corvinus. The attention is in the first place awarded to the noble families holding estates in this area during that period, but also to those which were connected to that area based upon their origin and in the time of King Matthias and the period immediately following played an important role in the political life of the Kingdom of Hungary, such was the case with the Szapolyai/Zapolja. The paper tries to compare the attitude of the magnates of this area to King Matthias and the attitude of the lesser and middling nobility towards him. For this occasion, the author tries to present the relationship of different families to the king and consequences which support or opposition to his rule had for their position, as well as changes in policies of some of them which were happening during the period, for which a very good example may be found in the case of the Újlaki/Iločki. Within the paper, it is demonstrated that King Matthias in these counties, as he did in general, often found support among the members of the lesser nobility who advanced on the social scale exactly through his service to the king. Also, in this area, it can be found examples of King Matthias' policy of relaying on his relatives to whom he entrusted important offices and granted them large estates also within the boundaries of these counties on which testify numerous examples. By an analysis of particular cases, the author tries to demonstrate which were the factors influencing rise of particular families. There is spoken also about those families reaching the peak of its power exactly in the time of King Matthias (as the Geréb), and also about those who in that period just started to climb towards it (as the Beriszló/Berislavići of Grabarja). An element influencing life and agency of the nobility in the area was also the fact that these three counties by the fall of Bosnia (1463) became immediately threatened by the Ottomans. After King Matthias founded the banates of Jajce and Srebrenik for the defence of Hungary, exactly the nobility of these areas played an important role also in their military organisation and defence, and because of that certain attention is awarded also to that aspect of their history.
