Covering & Creating Dissent 1968
The paper focuses on the Yugoslav youth press, a corpus of various newspapers and magazines produced under the auspices of the Yugoslav youth communist organizations, which during the late 1960-s stopped turned into a distinguished media factor that was unwilling to blindly follow the official party line. More concretely, the paper deals with the initial outbreak of this critical attitude of the Yugoslav youth and student press that was firmly linked to the sudden politicization of the Yugoslav students during the June 1968 unrest. The Yugoslav youth journals played a crucial role, both as a mediator and as an organizer in this revolt which aspired to cleanse the regime from within. Not only did they provide ample media space once the students found themselves on the streets, but were also heavily involved in all of the necessary preparations. In this paper I portray different media strategies of covering and initiating the 1968 student movement, used by the youth press of the three central Yugoslav republics - Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia.
