Measurement of vehicle vibration at bridge expansion joints

ABSTRACT. In addition to the usual procedures of quality control in supervising the works conducted during construction or reconstruction of a structure, several specialist procedures may be selected. This kind of approach is taken in cases when certain types of works are repeated on infrastructural objects more commonly than it is the case in the daily engineering practice. During 2007, during a state road reconstruction project, repair works were carried out on expansion joints on Vukovina II Bridge (Zagreb) that had previously been repaired in 2006. The repair project envisaged for the existing structures to be replaced by a new continuous expansion joint system, Thorma Joint. In the agreement with the contractor and in consultation with the investor, automobile vibration measurements were performed apart from regular technological inspections of the works conducted and the materials used, as increased vehicle vibrations had been recorded at the bridge structures that had degraded or had been poorly installed, thereby reducing the travel comfort. Measurements were conducted in two phases: prior to repair works and following the replacement of expansion joints. Vehicle vibrations were measured at the speeds of 30 to 70 km/h. Taking account of the significance of the pavement roughness on vibration magnitude, the road surface roughness was measured at the expansion joint zones using laser profilography. By measuring the vehicle vibrations dependent on the roughness on the bridge construction at the expansion joint zones, an overall assessment of the efficiency of the works and the type of expansion installed during the maintenance of the bridge structure was obtained.
