Possibilities for water supply on small and distant Adriatic islands
Water supply is a major problem on the Adriatic islands, especially during the summer tourist season. The solution for water supply to larger islands is water transfer from the mainland by way of regional pipelines. Such solution, however, is too expensive for smaller, distant islands. Thus investigations (geological and hydrogeological mapping, geophysical investigations, drilling, short-term and long-term pumping tests) were carried out on twelve smaller, distant islands to determine their own resources of brackish groundwater with chloride contents of maximum 6, 000 mg/l Cl, which would enable desalinisation. The results of the conducted investigations were the following: on four islands, water of the required quality and quantity was found ; on two islands, the required quantities of water were not found ; on one island the required quality of water was not found while on five islands no groundwater was found at all.
