Raising awareness on cervical cancer prevention in Croatia

ABSTRACT: Cervical cancer is one type of cancer that can be prevented and, if detected early enough, cured. In Croatia, opportunistic screening by Pap smear is offered to all sexually active women once a year for several decades. However, rates in Croatia do not compare favourably to other European countries with organised screening programmes (1). The reason for that is a limited number of women attending the gynaecologist. Advocate for effective cervical cancer prevention programmes in Croatia and raise awareness of the importance of primary and secondary cervical cancer prevention among women, physicians and policy makers were the priorities from 2003 when the Proposal for cervical cancer early detection programme in Croatia was submitted to the Croatian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (2). Thus, numerous activities were organised by the Croatian ECCA (European Cervical Cancer Association) members and associates on the occasion of the second European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week: 1) the press conference and media education on cervical cancer screening and Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination, 2) the expert meeting for health professional on future of cervical cancer prevention in Croatia, 3) the videoconference for general audience held between several cities and available directly on internet, 4) the public campaign involving media, politician, artist and citizens to sign the petition “ Stop cervical cancer” supported by ECCA and UICC (3), 5) the invitation to free screening with spread of educational materials, and finally 6) the public educational campaign nominated the First Croatian “ Day of Mimosa” as for the symbolic significance of the fight against cervical cancer. The media support all over the country was surprisingly impressive with more than 120 announcements on the daily newspapers, the weekly journals, the internet websites, the radios and the televisions. At the public signing ceremony throughout Croatia, more than 28.000 signatures were raised in one day. The tentative screening campaign was so successful that had to be prolonged for another week. On that occasion, about 500 women attended the screening, of which approximately 10% had abnormal smear. The politician and especially the policy makers had the opportunity to pledge for the best that is the organised cervical cancer screening to be implemented in Croatia in the near future (4). The Croatian example could serve as a model applicable to similar countries in need for organised cervical cancer prevention programmes. Still, continuous education at all levels is needed ; starting with the education of young people on reproductive health, the education of professionals and particularly physicians on HPV vaccination and screening benefit and finally, the education of policy makers on the fact that prevention is much more cost-effective than treatment of cervical cancer.
