Wood technology education - a basis for the development of the wood profession

The development of wood technology education, from its first bifurcation in 1947, has passed through six development periods. The initial steps were marked by the introduction of technical subjects and education of a new profile of engineers in the wood industry. In the third wood technology educational period, the study programs were complemented by technical subjects in accordance with the development of the wood industry. In the reorganization of the plan and program of the fourth wood technology educational period, it was concluded that the basic profile is to be a technologist, and that engineers would be education in a general sense only, with little specialization, and the thesis was introduced. The fifth wood technology education period is characterized by basic core and mandatory subjects for the education of engineers in the general sense, and includes a large number of mandatory and selective subjects leading to the general education of engineers. The sixth wood technology educational period occurred after the great reform of tertiary education at the European level, and in compliance with the principles of the Bologna Declaration in 1999, with the aim of creating a common tertiary education area in a united Europe (European Higher Education Area – EHEA). Taking into consideration our specific conditions, in cooperation with European faculties, at Wood Technology Department at the Faculty of Forestry in Zagreb, a new modern educational system was developed based on the model 3+2, which is a three-year undergraduate wood technology program, and a two-year graduate program divided into two areas: wood technology processes and product wood formation. The new educational system, based on the principles of the Bologna Declaration, along with the incorporated European ECTS system of transferring of points led a real achievement in educational levels in Croatia, as well as in the whole European area of tertiary education, thus allowing mobility of teachers and students. The new study program allows for the education of experts who can meet all the requirements of modern technology for processing and treatment of wood, and the production of wood furniture.
