Bear friendly products as a tool for public acceptance
Probably the key factor to determine the chance of a bear population survival in certain are is it’ s acceptance by local inhabitants. On one hand that is related to the degree of problems caused by bears, but on the other hand it depends on eventual economic benefit of co-existence with bears. In Croatia the brown bears (Ursus arctos) are game species and the gain revenue through trophy parts. However, this profit remains among hunters. To demonstrate the benefit of bears to general human population the other revenues are welcomed. One is through “ eco-tourism” and the other may be through the promotion of bear friendly products. We designed and printed “ bear friendly” logo in the form of stickers of different sizes. Also a made a model of bear foot print to be used by cheese producer. The loge we registered with the « State Institute for Intellectual Property» and the contracts with local producers are signed (5 so far). Most of them a family conducted business from the bear habitat that produce cheese or liqueurs and jams from wild grown berries. Negotiations with more producers are in progress.
