Cervical cancer prevention programmes and policies in Europe

Cervical cancer represents an important health problem throughout Europe with almost 50, 000 new cases and 22, 000 deaths per year (GLOBOCAN 2002). The highest incidence of cervical cancer in Europe is observed in Eastern European countries, where women do not have access to effective cervical cancer screening. Although, cervical cancer incidence and mortality has been reduced by more than 80% in countries where an organised screening programme has been implemented, organised nation-wide cervical cancer screening programmes are currently available only in a limited number of European countries, while others are either in the process of planning or have not yet considered to implement organised screening programmes. Nowadays, the introduction of new technologies, the liquid based cytology (LBC), the Human papillomavirus (HPV) testing, and the HPV vaccination offers the potential for further reductions of cervical cancer cases and death. European countries have now the possibility to implement comprehensive population-based organised cervical cancer prevention programmes, which integrate cervical screening together with HPV vaccination to ensure that effective long-term protection is equitably available to all women in Europe.
