Electrocardiographic changes and severity of acute pancreatitis
Etiology of electrocardiographic abnormalities is still unknown, and various arguments have been proposed, including direct toxic effect of pancreatic proteolytic enzymes, electrolyte and metabolic disorders, sympathomimetic influence or severe inflammatory response. Frequency of changes was assessed in a few small studies, and real prevalence is still unknown. Changes include rhythm disturbances (tachy and bradyarrhythmias, frequent atrial and ventricular premature beats), intraventricular conduction abnormalities (branch block) and repolarisation abnormalities (QTc duration, ST segment and T wave changes). Clear association with severity of pancreatitis and impact on treatment and prognosis of these patients is still unclear
