Cadmium concentration in tissues of roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) in Croatia from two different periods

Roe deer tissues (muscle, liver and kidney) collected during regular hunting procedures in lowlands Croatia (area of Podravina, Posavina, Pokuplje and eastern Slavonia) in two periods: 1990. - 1995. (n = 21) and 2007. – 2008. (n = 17) were analyzed for cadmium content by the method of AAS. Median concentration of cadmium in µ g/g on wet weight basis were: 0.015 (0.004 – 0.070), 0.424 (0.015 – 2.306), 2.278 (0.223 – 27.637) in muscle, liver and kidney, respectively for the earlier period. Median concentration of cadmium for the later period were: 0.005 (0.002 – 0.029), 0.388 (0.164 – 1.111), 3.346 (1.557 – 11.833) in muscle, liver and kidney, respectively. In majority of muscle samples concentration of cadmium is under the tolerable regulations (0.05 µ g/g), while liver and especially kidney contains cadmium above the maximum tolerable regulation (liver - 0.5 µ g/g, kidney – 1.0 µ g/g ) and are considered as unsuitable for human consumption. The origin of cadmium in investigated animals is probably partly natural and partly anthropogenic (intensive agricultural practice – use of phosphate fertilizers which can contain high concentration of cadmium
