Improvement of vertical diffusion analytic schemes under stable atmospheric conditions
Based on gradient transport theory or K-theory, turbulent transport in atmosphere has been parameterized with eddy diffusivity. Due to its simplicity, this approach has been often applied in many models but rarely tested on data. Here, widely used O’ Brien cubic polynomial approach has been validated together with an exponential approach against eddy diffusivity profiles determined from measurements and from LES data in stable conditions. Verification is completed by analyzing variability effects on pollutant concentrations of two different K(z) schemes incorporated in the atmospheric chemical model. It is shown that the analytical, exponential solution agrees better with measurements than O’ Brien’ s profile and should be used in practical applications where overall improvement with the new scheme is shown.
