Developing university as a place for promoting equality and inclusion

The aim of this paper is to develop some more understanding about opportunities and challenges of involving students with disabilities into the process of higher educaton, focusing on social work and social policy trainings. More recently, the profile of social work and social policy students has become more diverse – there are more students with disability, students from educationally and financially disadvantaged families, students grown up in children and youth residential units without parental care, or chronically ill students. For faculty teachers and practice teachers it has brought some new teaching experiences. For Department of Social Work, University of Zagreb, it means that a great job needs to be done in order to develop a continuing discussion on possible oppressive and beneficial outcomes. In the paper are presented results of qualitative research on equality and inclusion in Department of Social Work, University of Zagreb, from the perspective of students, teachers and service users. We wanted to find out how do they feel and talk about inclusion in social work education process ; how do they experience challenges and what opportunities in promoting equlity do they see ; how do they see their involvement and their role in education process ; what do they need to be better prepared for further challenges, what kind of changes in curriculum are desirable in order to promote anti-oppressive practice and what responsibilities have educators and professional community in promoting inclusion and equality in social work, social policy and higher education in general. Achievements, obstacles, and further steps in enhancing empowerment and participation of people with disabilities in Croatia are discussed.
