TEMPERATURE RISE IN COMPOSITE SAMPLE POLYMERIZED WITH DIFFERENT CURING MODES OF LEDs
Purpose: New generations of LED light curing units are slowly replacing halogen units and previous generations’ LED units. Halogen curing units used for the polymerization process produce much higher temperatures than previous generations’ LED units. The new generations of LED units have a higher light intensity, which reduces the curing time. However, the use of new generation LED lights may cause a rise in temperature due to the increased light intensity. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of two new generation LED curing lights with different curing modes on temperature rise in composite resin samples during their polymerization. General methods: Bluephase C8 and Bluephase 16i (both Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) LED curing units with different curing programs (high intensity program - HIGH, low intensity program - LOW and soft-start program - SOF) were used for composite polymerization (Tetric Ceram, Tetric EvoCeram). Temperature rise was measured using the ELV Pyroscan (Leer, Germany) thermometer and recording the temperature level at the beginning and at the end of illumination. Findings: Statistical analysis shows that regardless of the composite material used, there is a significant statistical difference between the temperature rise in the cases of polymerization with Bluephase C8 and Bluephase 16i LED curing lights under the LOW program (p=0.022) and SOF program (p=0.033). However, there is no significant statistical difference in polymerization with Bluephase C8 and Bluephase 16i LED curing lights under the HIGH polymerization program. Conclusion: The rise in temperature depends on the use of the polymerization program rather than on the type of curing light used.
