Human impact on complex aquifer system ‘ ’ Pašino vrelo’ ’ near Hrvatska Kostajnica – Croatia
The aquifer system ‘ ’ Pašino vrelo’ ’ is located in the central part of Croatia near the border of Bosnia and Herzegovina. ‘ ’ Pašino vrelo’ ’ system is situated in the valley of the Sunja and surrounded with hills and mountain Zrinska gora. The aquifer system consists of two aquifers: the alluvial aquifer, which is overlying on the carbonate aquifer. Abstraction of groundwater is at the Pašino vrelo pumping site and it is used for water supply of the town Hrvatska Kostajnica and surrounding settlements. Groundwater samples were taken from three abstraction wells, springs, and Sunja stream. The major cations and anions, and microbiological content were analyzed. The chemical analyses suggest the strong influence of alluvial waters on carbonate waters during high waters. Higher microbiological pollution was observed during storm events and wet seasons. The valley is populated and there is no sewerage network, so sewage wastewater is directly infiltrating in the alluvial aquifer.
