Histopathological and immunohistochemical findings in lungs and lymph nodes of pigs naturaly affected with post-weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome

The aim of this study was to investigate distribution of PCV2 and PRRSV in lungs and lymph nodes in naturally affected pigs with both PMWS and PRRS. Study is performed on 7 animals submitted during 1107/08 in which PRRS and PMWS were diagnosed. For immunohistovhemical detection of PCV2 and PRRSV anti-PCV and anti-PRRSV monoclonal antibodies were used. Histological findings were markedly thickened of alveolar septa of lungs with strong proliferation of pneumocytes type 2 and infiltration of macrophages ond lymphocites.Lymph nodes had depleted lymphoid follicles and hystiocyitic proliferation. Depleted follicles contained macrophages with basophilic grape-like intracytoplasmatic inclusions. Pulmonary lesions in all animals were considered as PNP. In all examined animals was detected large amount PCV2 and PRRSV antigen in pulmonary lesions. Observed distribution of both viruses founded in same area in large amount strongly support etiological hypotesis that both viruses were causative agents of PNP.
