Liposome-encapsulated parvovirus vaccine for pig protection
In this study, the protective potency of the liposomal vaccine was compared with that of commercially available inactivated oil vaccine Parvokal (Veterina Ltd. Zagreb, Croatia). Porcine parvovirus strain NADL-2 was propagated on porcine fetal kidney cells (PK-15) and the liposomal vaccine was prepared from whole and purified parvovirus particle incorporated into liposome. The procedure was based on dehydration and controled rehidration to induce fusion of perforemed liposomes. Twenty Swedish Landrace gilts were vaccinated 6 weeks before mating and revaccinated after 2 weeks with 2 ml of the liposomal vaccine i.m. Second group of animals was vaccinated with 2 ml of comercial vaccine i.m. Specific immune response eas measured by the hemagglutination inhibition tes and ELISA. The antibody lavel generated by liposomal vaccine induced a good protective immune response similar to those generated by the licenced vaccine. These results indicate that vaccines prepareted in the form of liposomes represent a step toward as safe and ecologically convenient vaccine.
