Analysis of stresses around the cold-worked crack arrest holes
One of the most successful methods for eliminating/retarding crack propagation, i.e. boring of holes in the crack ends, is analysed in this paper. After boring the holes are exposed to cold deformation by coining and then optionally filled with pins. The analysed model is a rectangular AlCuMg2 plate with a central hole with starting notches. The comparison of the calculated (NONSAP) and measured (46 strain gauges on the model) results shows satisfactory agreement, confirming the quality of the numerical model.
