Traditional CVD Risk Factors in Roma Minority Population of Croatia

Roma are the ethnic minority groups of northern Indian origin living in many countries throughout the world. They are well known for preserved traditions and resistance to assimilation and therefore usually marginalized economically, spatially, politically and in terms of culture. In order to assess cardiovascular diseases’ (CVD) risk factors prevalence in the Roma population of Croatia, a multidisciplinary community-based study was carried out in two regions – Baranja and Međimurje. The sample encompassed a total of 423 members (144 men and 279 women) of the Bayash Roma minority population aged 18-84 yrs (41.1 + 15.2). The study revealed the following mean (+SD) values of the traditional CVD risk factors: systolic BP 120.2 (+ 25.8) mm Hg, diastolic BP 75.8 (+13.5) mm Hg, cigarette smoking 21.6 (+ 18.0) pack/year, BMI 25.5 (+ 5.7) kg/m2, fasting glucose 5.4 (+1.2) mmol/L, triglycerides 2.0 (+1.8) mmol/L, cholesterol 5.5 (+1.7) mmol/L, LDL 3.6 (+1.0) and HDL 1.6 (+1.1) mmol/L. Hypertension was found in 24.8% Roma (BP > 140/90 mm Hg) with age related trend increasing from 5.9% in the age group 18-34 yrs, through 35.0% in the age group 35-64 yrs and 51.4% in those aged 65+ yrs. Although the overall prevalence of hypertension in Roma was almost half of the magnitude usually reported for general population of Croatia, the presented results showed that they bear a high CVD risk factors load. It is related to smoking, obesity, and high glucose and lipids levels. We expect that, along with westernization of their life-style and increase of their economic power, the proportion of CVD in Croatian Roma will also increase. Therefore, it is important to recognize the need for early prevention of risk factors for cardiovascular disease in this minority population.
