As Croatia’ s accession to the European Union is soon to become a reality, there is an increased need for translators and interpreters for Croatian and other working languages of the European Union. Osijek University has recognized the need for an MA programme in translation studies, which will be offered by the German, English and Croatian departments of the Faculty of Philosophy in 2008. This handbook is a result of our preparations for the programme, and is intended as recommended and additional reading material for students of translation and interpreting. The authors of over 20 papers are teachers, professors and practicing translators and interpreters who participate in the implementation of the MA programme in translation studies in Osijek. Their papers focus on different translation issues related to the courses they will be teaching. The handbook may also be of use to scholars and practicing translators and interpreters, with whom we wish to establish links in order to improve our course content and structure. The diverse topics covered in the present volume are not intended to cover and exhaust all the possible approaches and strands of research. The aim was to illustrate the diversity of both the field of translation studies and specific translation issues and tasks. The topics range from the general (the extensive overview provided by Prunč), contrastive translation studies, contrastive translation studies, translation of phraseology, translation process research, descriptive translation studies, followed by the applied translation studies or translation pedagogy and competence, textual competence, cognitive linguistic studies, followed by contributions focusing on translation practice, such as literary translation, translation in the context of EU integrations, and legal translation.
