Bone histology traits as prognostic factor in myelodysplastic syndrome

Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are characterized by defective hematopoiesis and a risk of transformation into Acute leukemia. Altered bone marrow microenvironment, both hematopoietic and stromal lineagte, can affect bone cel biology. Bone histology and bone marrow componentswere assessed in bone biopsies of 102 MDS patients with regard to survival. Patients without inappropriately increased blasts for MDS sub-class had better survival. Furthermore, in these patients wurvival was found to be related to bone resorption and when eroded surface was esceeding 8% if was a prerogative for survival in the entire follow up preiod. The results suggest interaction of disturbed marrow content with bone tissue in MDS and evaluation of bone tissue characteristics could be useful in the course of clinical diagnostic procedures.
