Gas amplification, ionization coefficient and energy resolution in some pure gases and gas mixtures in strong electric fields
Gases (propane, isobutane, DME) and their mixtures with argon were studied in strong non-uniform electric fields of a proportional counter. Over-exponential dependence of gas gain on high voltage in mixtures with low partial pressure of admixture was observed. A partial pressure of 10 kPa was determined as a requirement for good quenching property of the mixture. The best energy resolution was measured in intermediate gas gain range for lower admixture concentrations, but at high gas gains R degraded very fast. The Townsend ionisation coefficient alpha/P was determined for all gases and gas mixtures over a wide range of strong reduced electric field strengths. The alpha/P under non-equilibrium conditions was dependent on gas pressure.
