Prevention of cervical cancer
The cervical carcinoma is one of the most frequent cancers in women. Despite considerable improvements in cancer early detection, the number of women presenting at an advanced stage of cancer is still rather high. Moreover, there is a rise in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia in women under thirty years of age. Among numerous risk factors, infection with human papillomaviruses (HPVs) represent the major one. Due to the sexual transmission, and oncogenic potential of some HPV types, genital HPV infection demand extensive diagnosis, and subsequent therapy. Any abnormal cytologic smear that is not clinically, and colposcopically confirmed to be caused by inflammations is recommended for HPV diagnosis.
