Observations on Cordyceps riverae (Clavicipitales, Ascomycotina) in Croatian caves
Apart from the Laboulbeniales there is no existing data about the presence of fungi in the Croatian caves according to the literature known to the authors. Thus, this paper appears to be the first contribution on cave macromycetes in Croatia. During the systematic biospeleological field work on the Dinaric karst area, eight populations of the entomogenous species Cordyceps riverae Pacioni (Clavicipitales, Ascomycotina) have been found since 1990. Some 200 speleological objects have been so far visited in order to find the species with 70 objects settled by subtroglophilic lepidopteran species of the genus Triphosa (Geometridae), which is apparently the only potentional host of C. riverae. C. riverae have been found in only eight objects while the species have been collected from five objects, which are situated in Gorski kotar, kordun and Dalmacija regions. Full description of C. riverae, a comparison to the other world collections, a detailed ecological observations as well as the mapping of known both the species and host distribution are given.
