Multiculturalism of Difference: Safeguarding Minorities’ Musical Heritage in Croatia and Beyond

The contribution aims to outline the politics of musical multiculturalism in post-socialist and post-Yugoslavian states, Croatia in particular. It is the multiculturalism of difference (also called corporate, managed or difference multiculturalism), which, while celebrating cultural pluralism, reinforces the essentialist and bounded expressions of group identity, ethnic in particular. The argument will be supported by the analysis of multicultural festivals and projects of intangible cultural heritage. On the other side are musical pathways of multicultural exchanges, in Croatia mainly connected with informal music scenes, peripheral urban spaces, electronic networking, and affinity human groupings. This opposition will lead towards an attempt to open a discussion on the entrappings of multiculturalism (its politics, practice, and theorizing) as either a difference or a hybrid.
