Effect of the asymmetric density-temperature relationship of water on natural convection in an enclosure
The effect of density inversion on transient natural convection in water is studied numerically by the finite volume method. The investigation is carried out in order to study the inversion of flow patterns caused by the maximum density of water in a rectangular enclosure with vertical walls maintained at constant temperatures 0 °C and 8 °C. Numerical simulations are obtained for both symmetric (parabolic) and asymmetric density temperature relationships of water, for three different values of initial water temperature, i.e. 2, 4 and 6 °C. In all the cases performed, two counter rotating vortices caused by the density inversion arose in the cavity. The change from the symmetric to the asymmetric density-temperature relationship is reflected in the asymmetry of temperature and flow field, while the average Nusselt number at vertical walls in a steady state remains practically unchanged. In the case of initial temperature of 2 °C, the time needed to reach the steady state is considerably prolonged.
