Interrelations of calcium and magnesium absorption in the chicken's caeca

Interrelations of calcium and magnesium absorption were investigated using sacs made of the surviving chicken's caeca. The sacs were filled with the combined solutions of calcium and magnesium chlorides. In one series of experiments the concentration of calcium was always the same (100 mg/L) and the concentration of magnesium varied (0 - 200 mg/L) ; in the second series of experiments the concentration of magnesium was always the same (100 mg/L) and the concentration of calcium varied (0 - 200 mg/L). From the serosal side of the sac Tyrode solution was placed. The results of absorption were established by determining the calcium and magnesium concentration in the solution on the serosal side of the sacs. The intensity of calcium absorption progressively diminished with the increasing magnesium concentration in the contents, and the intensity of magnesiumabsorption progressively diminished with the increasing calcium concentration in the contents, although some discrepancies were noticed concerning the rate of absorption of each single cation. It is concluded that the mechanisms of calcium and magnesium absorption in different segmants of the digestive tract are everywhere the same, disregarding the morphologic feature of the mucous membrane in question.
