Influence of calcium ions on gastric absorption of magnesium ions in cattle
The absorption of magnesium ions was studied in the bovine rumen and abomasum in relation to the actually present concentration of calcium ions in the contents. The in vitro method of bags made of the surviving mucuos membrane of these organs was used for this purpose. The bags were filled with the combined solution of calcium and magnesium chloride. The concentration of magnesium was always the same (10 mg/100 ml), while the concentration of calcium varied, amounting to 0, 5, 10 and 20 mg/100 ml. Tyrode solution was placed from the external(submucosal) side of the mucous membrane. The intensity of magnesium absorption was estimated by determining the magnesium concentration in the solution placed from the submucosal side of the mucous membrane at the beginning and at the end of the experiment. With 5 mg Ca/100 ml in the contents the intensity of magnesium absorption was nearly the same as in the absence of calcium ions, but with further increase of the calcium concentration it diminished gradually. The existence of a common transport system for both ions is suggested.
