Development of Cultural Tourism in Continental Croatia Through Reinforcing Indigenous Cultural Identity

This research explores and extends the theory and practice of the contemporary tourism destination development, focusing on the alternative approaches to develop tourism in the continental part of Croatia by emphasizing its wealth of cultural attractions and highlighting opportunities for their successful economic valorisation. The main objective of this research is to outline the meaning and scope of regional tourism development based on local cultural values. Such development is primarily seen as a tool for generating additional economic activity that provides benefits to the local community, but also as a project of national interest aimed at the preservation of local cultural distinct identities. In the context of the forthcoming European Union (EU) enlargement, this paper also argues that regional tourism development strategy for non-tourism areas, far away from the mass tourism destinations, requires an alternative approach while policymakers need to go further to develop recognizable cultural tourist product and increase the regional competitiveness. In that sense, regional tourism development in the continental part of Croatia is seen through reinforcing indigenous cultural identity closely related to other special interest tourism such as heritage tourism, urban tourism, rural tourism, health tourism, wine and food tourism, event tourism as well as educational tourism.
