LIBERTY BRIDGE – CENTRAL SAVA RIVER CROSSING IN ZAGREB
Liberty Bridge in Zagreb has been serving as central Sava River crossing for fifty years as it connects Old Zagreb at the north bank with New Zagreb at the south bank. This arch bridge is result of multiannual intensive and very studious work of professor Tonković, who designed not only all structural elements of the bridge, but also every detail such as original railings, lighting and cornice and, as great visionary, correctly predicted city sprawl to the south bank and made plan of wider urban and transport interventions. Bridge design and its current structural condition are described in the paper. Bridge was widened during construction from carrying two to four traffic lanes. An idea of new bridge widening to meet the requirements of modern traffic is discussed in the paper.
