Latency of H wave in correlation with the age and height of healthy examinees
Secondary muscle response, H wave, was analysed in 104 healthy persons, 56 males and 48 females, aged 15-59, 160-185 or more cm high. The tibial nerve was stimulated by surface electrode in the popliteal fossa, and secondary muscle response from surae muscle was recorded by needle electrode. H wave latency ranged from 28.4 msec for the 160 cm tall persons, to 32.4 msec for those of 180 cm or more. No correlation for secondary muscle response features with the age or sex of examined persons was found. Prolongation of secondary muscle response latency was noted in conformity with the subject' s height only. In conclusion, these results should be taken in consideration while analysing secondary muscle latency and establishing a diagnosis of neuropathy or radiculopathy.
