Determination of Phosphorus content on cotton fabric treated with flame retardant agents
Cotton is inflammable textile fiber. It burns or smoulders in the presence of oxygen and heat (360 – 420º ; C). Resistance to burning is one of the most desirable properties of cotton. In this study, cotton fabric was treated with organophosphorus flame retardant agent combined with melamine based resin and compared to the novel system where standard binder was substituted with the ecologically and economically accepted one. For that purpose, widely used melamine formaldehyde (MF) binder is successfully replaced with citric acid (CA). This alternative agent has been used until now for improvement of DP finishing and dimensional stability while in this paper it is used to bond organophosphorus oligomer to cotton and impart durable FR properties. The flame retardance of the treated cotton fabrics were characterized by limiting oxygen index (LOI) according to EN ISO 4589-2:1996/AMD1:2005 and vertical flammability test according to ISO 6940:2003. Correlation between LOI and phosphorus content was investigated on the cotton fabric treated whit FR agents before and after the 10 washing cycles. Phosphorus concentration on the fabrics was analysed by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP - AES) and the tensile strength was measured according to DIN EN ISO 13934-1
