HIV vaccines
The extensive spread of HIV disease world-wide and the discovery of its causative virus lead to enormous effort to find effective antiretroviral drugs as well as drugs for prevention and treatment of opportunistic infections in AIDS. Last decade, in spite of the success obtained with the introduction of antiretroviral drugs and especially with the HAART therapy, the HIV epidemic has been growing in many developing countries. The cost of such therapy is high, the new drugs are rather toxic, and the virus could become resistant. Therefore, for a better control of the HIV epidemic the development of a safe and efficient vaccine can be of paramount importance. The experience with vaccine against other viral diseases (polio, hepatitis B, variola) demonstrated remarkable efficacy. So there is a hope a vaccine can be the best way to stop the HIV epidemic. The authors describe new approaches with vaccine that stimulate cellular and humoral immunity against HIV, and review the mucosal immunity.
